Customized medications are used in circumstances where the drug or dosage required is not commercially available and/or the traditional delivery method is not effective or is not tolerated well by the patient.

These medications are made by a process called compounding in which a personalized medication is formulated to address the unique problem presented by an individual. Such an approach is invaluable in many circumstances.

Lenox Village Integrative Pharmacy is proud to have as Managing Pharmacist Dan Walczyk, RPh—one of the few professionally trained compounding pharmacists in Massachusetts. Dan brings his caring and expertise into our state-of-the-art clean room where he creates a myriad of custom medications.

The following are some treatment challenges where customized medications provide particularly effective options for relief:

Pediatric Care

Children often resist medicine because of taste, even the liquids that are available over the counter. Compounding helps encourage kids to take their medicine by offering a wider range of flavorings and unique delivery methods such as lollipops!

Veterinary Medicine

Animals sometimes present their owners with challenges when administering medication. For animals that refuse to swallow pills but will easily swallow fluid, the medication can be formulated into liquid form. Or, if the medication prescribed is primarily manufactured for humans, the required dosage may need to be smaller than what is commercially available. In those cases, special dosages can be compounded so the owner does not have to cut the large, human-sized, pills into smaller pieces.

Pain Management

Medicine compounded into creams is absorbed more effectively through the skin than traditional delivery methods. Extended release capsules help to assure continuous levels of medication in the patient's system. When designing medication plans for sports-related pain or chronic conditions such arthritis, neuropathies and fibromyalgia, customized medications offer physicians a wider range of options from which to create an individual treatment regime.

Hormone replacement

Specially compounded bio-identical creams rubbed into the skin offer a natural and easily absorbed alternative to mass-produced chemical based HRT. Our experience in compounding estrogen, progesterone and testosterone provides a safe, natural alternative for achieving hormonal balance during menopause.

Dermatology

Conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, viral infections and wound care can be highly individualized. Customized medications provide myriad options for creating effective topical solutions.
